Nextiva Alternative: A Business Phone System That Lets You Leave

Most people searching for a Nextiva alternative are not shopping for fun. They feel stuck. A renewal notice landed, a surprise charge hit the card, or a sales promise did not match the signed contract. This page shows what Nextiva customers report in public complaints, how to leave cleanly without losing your numbers, and what a phone system without lock-in looks like.

By Joey Bolohan, Founder · Updated June 5, 2026

The short version

  • Nextiva's own Master Terms say your contract auto-renews for another full term unless you cancel with at least 30 days of notice before your term ends.
  • BBB complaints, as of August 2026, describe billing that kept going after customers ported their numbers away. One case: $16,532.65 over five months.
  • BBB complaints also describe $0.00 line items that turned into $15 and $6 per user per month charges after 30 days.
  • Porting your numbers away does NOT cancel a Nextiva account. Cancellation is a separate written request.
  • Business Phone System is month to month. No contract. One flat quoted price with no fee stacking. We port your numbers for you, and when you leave, the billing stops. Call us for a flat quote.

Why business owners look for a Nextiva alternative

Business owners look for a Nextiva alternative for three reasons that show up over and over in public complaints: contracts that renew on their own, bills that keep coming after the numbers leave, and add-on charges nobody knowingly bought. As of August 2026, the Better Business Bureau lists 259 complaints against Nextiva in the last three years. The pattern is not broken phones. It is trust.

I signed a 24 month contract and was told by the sales rep that once the contract ended it would be month to month. I signed the contract but was NEVER told that there was a hidden auto-renew clause.

ComplaintsBoard reviewer, as of August 2026

Getting help can be its own job. Another ComplaintsBoard reviewer describes being transferred from support to customer relations to billing, on hold 30 minutes to an hour with each transfer, with nobody helping in the end. ComplaintsBoard shows a 2.3 star rating for Nextiva across 29 complaints and 16 reviews as of August 2026. If any of that sounds like your last three months, the next sections cover the contract clause, the billing trap, the fees, and the exact steps to get out.

Does Nextiva auto-renew your contract?

Yes. Nextiva's own Master Terms and Conditions, posted on nextiva.com/legal as of August 2026, state that services will automatically renew for subsequent terms of the same length as the initial term unless you cancel with at least 30 days of notice before the term ends. Miss that window and you are signed up for another full term, whether you wanted it or not.

  • Sign a 24-month deal, and doing nothing signs you up for 24 more months.
  • The clock runs on the contract date, not the day you get frustrated. If your term ends June 30, your written notice must land by May 31.
  • What a sales rep says out loud does not control. The signed contract and the linked terms do. One BBB complainant reports finding the auto-renew clause only on a linked webpage, not in the main contract they signed.
  • Nextiva's terms list cancellation by email at service@nextiva.com or by phone, at least 30 days before the term expires. Use email. You want a written record with a date on it.

The most valuable date you own

Put your Nextiva term end date on your calendar today, even if you are not leaving yet. Every renewal decision runs on that one date.

Before your window opens, run through our contract renewal checklist so nothing catches you off guard.

Can Nextiva keep billing you after you port your numbers away?

Customers report that it happens. In one BBB complaint, as of August 2026, a business ported its numbers to a new provider and says Nextiva kept charging its credit card for five more months, a total of $16,532.65. Porting your numbers does not cancel a Nextiva account. Cancellation is a separate written request with its own 30-day clock.

  • The business had been paying about $3,306.53 a month at Nextiva, versus about $650 a month at its new provider.
  • Its card company clawed back four of the five months. One month, $3,306.53, fell outside the dispute window and was never refunded.
  • The lesson: chargebacks have time limits. They are a backstop, not a plan.

Phone services were fully ported away to a new carrier on April 24, 2026... your company kept my account billing active and charged my credit card automatically for services you were no longer providing.

BBB complaint, verified as of August 2026

This is not one old story. A ComplaintsBoard reviewer reports the same pattern, with billing attempts continuing after the numbers were ported and a cancellation notice was sent. Another describes a contract renewing after a termination ticket was filed, followed by a demand for $2,500 in termination fees.

Two separate events

The port and the cancellation are two separate events. Moving your numbers moves your numbers. The account, and its billing, stay alive until a compliant written cancellation is processed.

Does Nextiva have hidden fees?

Customers report surprise charges, and Nextiva's advertised price has fine print. The $15 per user Core price is annual pricing that requires a paid 12-month or longer term, per Nextiva's pricing page as of August 2026. Month to month, Core is $23 and Engage is $50 per user. BBB complaints also describe $0.00 line items that later converted to paid charges.

Two line items... were displayed at $0.00. The terms converting them to paid charges ($15/user and $6/user per month) were placed in small parenthetical text... They began billing automatically after 30 days unless I cancelled them.

BBB complaint, verified as of August 2026

The named add-ons in that complaint were a Productivity Plugin and an SMB Web Chat Only Bundle. The complainant says the bill roughly doubled to about $120 a month, that Nextiva offered $60, then $300, against about $600 in disputed charges, and that the early termination fee worked out to about $106 a month, a number the complainant says was only reachable by including the disputed add-ons. Our guide to VoIP hidden fees covers the line items to check on any provider's bill.

PlanAnnual pricingMonthly pricing
Core$15 per user/mo$23 per user/mo
Engage$25 per user/mo$50 per user/mo
Scale$75 per user/mo$75 per user/mo

The fine print, straight from Nextiva's pricing page as of August 2026: the annual price is for new small business customers signing a paid 12-month or longer minimum term agreement. So the low advertised number is gated behind the very contract that auto-renews. Taxes, fees, and add-ons come on top. For what a system should really cost, see our business phone system cost guide.

What Nextiva does well, honestly

Nextiva is not a scam, and this page should not read like one. Nextiva holds an A+ rating with the BBB and is BBB Accredited as of August 2026, even with the complaint volume. It offers deep features, 24/7 support on its plans, and one platform that combines calls, chat, and customer management. Large teams that accept a term contract can do fine there. The question is what you are trading for it.

How do I cancel Nextiva?

Cancel Nextiva in writing, at least 30 days before your term ends, and only after your numbers finish porting to your new provider. Email service@nextiva.com so you have a record, and ask for written confirmation. Then watch your card statement for two to three billing cycles, because customers report charges continuing after cancellation. The paper trail matters.

  1. 1

    Find your term end date

Pull your signed agreement. Your written notice must arrive at least 30 days before that date, or the contract renews for another full term.

  2. 2

Set up your new service first

The FCC says never cancel your old service before your number port completes, or you risk losing your numbers. Simple ports must finish within one business day.

  3. 3

    Port your numbers, then cancel

Once your numbers are live at the new provider, email service@nextiva.com. State the account, the numbers, and the cancellation date. Ask for written confirmation. Email beats phone because it leaves a record.

  4. 4

Watch your card for 2 to 3 cycles

BBB complaints, as of August 2026, document charges continuing after customers ported away. If a charge appears, dispute it fast. Card dispute windows expire, and in one BBB case a $3,306.53 month was never recovered.

  5. 5

    Audit the final invoice

Look for add-ons you never knowingly bought, including line items that started at $0.00.

One more reason to keep every email: cancellation problems are a known issue in the phone industry. In 2022 the FTC reached a $100 million settlement with Vonage, a different provider, over practices that trapped customers who tried to cancel, and in October 2023 the FTC announced nearly $100 million in refunds to 389,106 Vonage customers. That case did not involve Nextiva. It simply shows regulators treat continued billing after cancellation as a serious matter, and your written records are your protection with any provider. The full move, start to finish, is mapped in our guide to switching business phone providers.

  • Auto attendants, the menu that greets callers and routes them to the right person.
  • Ring groups, where one number rings several phones so calls never die at an empty desk.
  • Call forwarding for after hours or on the road.

The promises that matter after what you just read

  • When you leave, billing stops. No 30-day trap door. No charges after you are gone. That is the whole point.
  • A real person answers. When you call support, you talk to a human being, not a phone tree.

You do not need another 24-month decision today. You need a quote you can compare against your current bill. Call us or send your details. Tell us how many phones and locations you have, and we will give you one flat number.

Common questions

How do I cancel Nextiva?

Find your term end date. Then email service@nextiva.com at least 30 days before that date and ask for written confirmation. Port your numbers to your new provider first and cancel second. The FCC advises never cancelling old service before your port completes. After cancelling, check your card statement for two to three cycles, because BBB complaints describe charges that continued after customers left.

Does porting my number away cancel my Nextiva account?

No. Porting moves your numbers, but the account and its billing stay active until you cancel under Nextiva's terms. This is the most expensive mistake customers describe. In one BBB complaint, as of August 2026, billing continued for five months after a port, totaling $16,532.65, and one month was never refunded. Always send a separate written cancellation and get confirmation.

How much does Nextiva really cost per month?

As of August 2026, Nextiva lists Core at $15 per user per month with annual pricing, or $23 monthly. Engage is $25 annual or $50 monthly. Scale is $75. The annual prices require new customers to sign a paid 12-month or longer term, and that term is the contract that auto-renews. Taxes, fees, and any add-ons come on top of those numbers.

What phone system does not lock you in?

Business Phone System runs month to month with no long-term contract and no auto-renew clause. You get one flat quoted price, and we handle your number porting. If you ever leave, your billing stops. Will I lose my phone number if I leave Nextiva?

No. Federal rules give you the right to take your number to a new provider, and the FCC says simple ports must complete within one business day. Just do not cancel Nextiva before the port finishes, or the number could be lost. Port first, confirm the numbers work at your new provider, then send written cancellation. Business Phone System handles the entire porting process for new customers.
